20th-22nd July - Drive Yourself Crazy Weekend

Drive Yourself Crazy!

Basingstoke  20th – 22nd July  2012

A Senate Weekend with a difference reprising a popular event last held in 2006!

Ever wanted to drive a bus, an articulated lorry  or a fork lift truck*? . . .

Well now’s your chance (or second chance if you came last time)!  The Basingstoke branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists has organised another unusual vehicles day for us.  The whole-day event will comprise:

Ø    Driving unusual vehicles* (off road)

Ø    Manoeuvring around a course in your own car

Ø    Having your road driving checked by an IAM observer

Points will be awarded for driving the unusual vehicles and manoeuvring and there will be prizes for the best male and female drivers.  There are no points or prizes for the road driving check!

*  Specific vehicle types are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed, but there will be a good selection.

Note:  Unfortunately due to space limitations at the venue for this event, there are only a maximum 26 driving places on this weekend!  Our Saturday dinner will seat max 30.  So book now!

Senate “Drive Yourself Crazy” Weekend - Full Itinerary:

Friday 20 July

Arrive whenever you like - hotel check-in from 14.00.  Nothing is arranged until the evening but our hotel is near to The Vyne (NT), Stratfield Saye (Duke of Wellington’s Country House which we visited last time), Wellington Country Park and the site of the Roman Town of Calleva (small museum at Silchester).  Basingstoke and Reading are nearby for shopping.  Evening buffet is two courses plus 1/3 bottle of wine (or a soft drink!) in private room at 8.00pm.

Saturday 21 July

Breakfast in our hotel then drive in your own car to IAM venue in Basingstoke (10.00am start).  Full day driving with light lunch (including soft drinks only!).  Prizegiving about 4.00pm then drive back to the hotel in good time for 7.30 drinks reception and 8.00 meal in private dining room - 3 courses with wine.  A chance to catch up with the alcohol intake - half bottle (or soft drink) provided – you can have more by cash bar!

This is a Senate Council meeting weekend – by request of the Chairman the Council meeting will take place in the bar on return to the hotel.

Sunday 22 July

Breakfast in our hotel again then we are off to nearby Basing House – for details see http://www3.hants.gov.uk/hampshire-museums/basing-house. We have a personally guided tour at 10.30 followed by a light lunch (not included in price).  Basing House was built in 1535 and regular Civil War re-enactments are held there.  The house is now a ruin (so don’t expect nice furnishings!) but the grounds are extensive with an excellent museum.

Our Hotel

Is again the Wellington Arms Hotel at Stratfield Saye, on the A33 about 5 miles north of Basingstoke.  Single, double and twin rooms are available.  Single rooms are £60 per night, double/twin are £75 per room per night including full English breakfast.  Please book direct with hotel on 01256 882214 quoting “British Senate”.  Please book early as the hotel is small and there are no other hotels nearby!  Also note that our special rate and allocation is only guaranteed until the end of May.

This is an inexpensive weekend!  Prices for Friday/Saturday are almost unchanged from 2006!  The total cost for the whole weekend (Friday dinner to Sunday morning tour inclusive) is just £167.50pp double and £212.50 single.  That includes 2 nights accommodation, 2 breakfasts, two dinners (with wine) and one lunch (Sunday lunch is extra).  What a bargain.

Please see below for the booking form.  Remember to book early to avoid disappointment and to book the hotel yourself!
