Chairman's Message

11th May 2008

Greetings fellow Senators to the second newsletter for 2008.

It does not seem like a third of the Senate year has passed already but it has. We have had a busy time. Some moments have been sad like the passing of active Senators, such as Murdoch Urquhart. Some moments very enjoyable such as experiencing the detonation of explosives to demolish a 20 storey building and the sight of weary but happy Senators coming down of the Lakeland fells. Both of these events were part of the two fantastic Senate weekends we have had in our programme so far this year.

Many of the future events on our programme now have only limited spaces available for you to join us, so I really would recommend booking very soon. Later this month we are off to Epernay to enjoy champagne along with a few surprises! Next month we will be enjoying the delights of Lincolnshire and then in July, the Buxton opera. August will see us in Northampton, September Wells in Somerset with our banquet dinner in the Cathedral Undercroft. October will be a ‘watershed’ in Banbury. Hopefully all will be revealed before we return home. The Senate year will be completed by a fantastic celebration of English wine during our drumming out weekend in the Surrey countryside. Don’t forget you can keep up with the latest on all our events through our website www.britishsenate.org.uk

In June we will also experience one of the highlights of the international calendar, the European conference in Turku, Finland. This year is especially important for the British senate as we are supporting two candidates for the Association of European Senators board. Paul Hill is a candidate for ambassador and Clare Ashton candidate for President. One of the ways in which we are supporting them is to sponsor the Senate bar on the Friday evening of the conference. Should you be attending the conference one easy way to help us with this is to bring some duty free from the UK to Finland. If you are able to help with this please contact me for more information on email at barry@millers.me.uk or by phone on (07803) 259 138. You can also assist with the bar whilst in Finland, its great fun.

The Senate is all about friendship and having fun. You may have noticed that we are reviving the Lion logo which was once the British Junior Chamber national logo. If it is good enough to be revived for British eggs it is certainly good enough for the British Senate. He will be making an appearance at all our events throughout the remainder of the year.

Very best wishes and Senate friendship to you all.

Barry Miller, 51886
